The Language and Learning Centre provides a warm and caring environment in which to study. We run a Foundation Programme, General English and English for Academic Purposes courses throughout the year. Tailor made courses for groups can also be arranged.

Summer courses include General English and Communicative Skills, Advanced English plus Business or Cultural Studies, Teacher Development (refresher courses for practising teachers of English) and Pre-University Preparation(EAP) Minimum age 18. All levels except beginner. We are an IELTS test centre and arrangements can be made to take other Cambridge exams locally.

Our students have access to all university facilities, library, computer workstations (e-mail and internet), multi-media language laboratory, sports facilities and swimming pool. The Arts Centre has a theatre, cinema, hall, exhibition space, shop and wholefood café. Accommodation is in hall of residence in single study bedroom with shared kitchen and bathroom. En-suite accommodation may be available at extra cost. There is a supermarket nearby. Meals are available from the student refectory or Arts Centre café.

The summer course fee includes a full and lively social programme. Two organised evening activities per week, local excursions and full day trips. Social organisers can assist with arrangements for students to follow their own leisure interests, eg golf, horse riding. We provide welfare and pastoral care. Academic year students are encouraged to join the Guild of Students and take part in the social life of the university.

Pre-sessional English for Academic Purposes Programme

This programme is designed for students intending to study at undergraduate or postgraduate degree levels at a British university, with particular benefits for those planning their degree study at the University of Wales Aberystwyth. Popular programmes include MBA, Masters in Management, Law, Computer Science and International Politics.

Programme Aims (PS1 and PS2)

The programme aims to help students develop the language skills necessary for successful degree study and to adjust to life and study in Britain. A generous ratio of staff to students is maintained and students receive regular detailed advice in individual weekly tutorials. Independent learning skills are encouraged, and we provide a full introduction to the use of university computer and library facilities. English language skills are developed through academic tasks which reflect the demands of the university and include core tasks that are completed in the student's own subject area. Students practise :

• producing academic writing of an acceptable standard
• participating in seminar discussion and presentations
• improving listening and note-taking skills for the academic context
• efficient research skills and dealing with specialist reading materials

Module PS1 - Eight weeks

Recommended length of course for students with IELTS 6.0 / TOEFL 213 (computer test) or 550 (paper test)

Module PS2 - Four weeks

• For students who have already satisfied or are close to satisfying English language requirements for university entry
• The Language and Learning Centre is an IELTS testing centre
• During the academic year core pre-sessional staff provide continuing support to international students through in-sessional programmes
• For students whose current language levels are lower than those mentioned for Modules PS1 and PS2, the Centre offers year-round University Preparation Programmes accredited by the British Council
• The Aberystwyth campus itself is noted for its attractive location and the area enjoys a good reputation for personal safety
• Excellent research facilities also available in the adjacent National Library of Wales, which holds one of only 5 UK copyright collections
